One Health Joint Plan

The Quadripartite collaboration on One Health, comprising the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United Nations Environment Programme, World Health Organization, and the World Organisation for Animal Health, has agreed to extend the implementation period of the One Health Joint Plan of Action from 2022-2026 to 2029. This extension will provide countries with greater predictability for planning and implementing national One Health priorities.

Ensuring continuity of One Health implementation

The original implementation period was due to conclude in 2026, but the extension to 2029 will enable governments, partners, and stakeholders to continue aligning their activities with the extended OH JPA at national, regional, and global levels. By maintaining the OH JPA as its shared framework, the Quadripartite will continue to support coordinated, multisectoral collaboration to prevent, detect, and respond to health risks at the human, animal, plant, and ecosystem interface.

Strengthening the Quadripartite collaboration

The extension of the OH JPA is also aligned with the renewed Quadripartite Memorandum of Understanding to 2030, which reinforces the long-term collaboration between the four organizations. Together, the renewed MoU and the extended OH JPA provide continuity for the governance and implementation arrangements that guide Quadripartite collaboration on One Health until 2030.

Structured review to inform the next phase of the One Health Joint Plan of Action

During the extension period, the Quadripartite organizations will undertake a structured review of the OH JPA to inform the development of its next phase. The review will include stocktaking of implementation progress, documentation of lessons learned and good practices, assessment of emerging priorities, and identification of opportunities to strengthen and refine the OH JPA. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, this review will help to build a stronger evidence base for the future direction of the OH JPA.

The extension period will enable the Quadripartite to consolidate progress, respond to emerging One Health priorities, and demonstrate how a One Health approach can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals under the 2030 Agenda.
